While Philadelphia is the 6th largest city in the US, it often reminds me of living in a small town. Friday night served as reinforcement of this notion for me. After a long, mind-numbing week, I made my way to Varga (10th and Spruce) to have a few much needed drinks with my friend, Stephanie. I got a little side-tracked along the way. The shiny distraction in question – Giovanni’s Room. After snagging a copy of Brazen Femme: Queering Feminity and The Slow Fix by Ivan E. Coyote (my fave storyteller), I made my way over to Varga.
So, here comes the small world bit. I knew that Stephanie was meeting someone there, but I didn’t know that I would be running into the Crush too! I met her this summer, and have run into her several time since. I am amused by the entire situation given that I don’t crush often. It has been years in fact! May write more about it under the cut, but nuff said about this for the moment.
Everyone was already enjoying their drinks of choice when I got there. After a quick glance at the menu, I chose the Pumpkin Ale – very smooth, even bodied, wonderful aftertaste.
We ended up ordering the Jumbo Lump Cheese Fries and the Truffled Mac ‘N Cheese. The Mac ‘N Cheese was divine…beyond yummy! The particular blend of cheeses - gruyere, fontina, and marscarpone – is spectacular. The hint of truffle pulled the dish together beautifully! It’s the ultimate comfort food, created a wonderful celebration in my mouth.
It’s great being out and about again. Trips to NYC, salsa lessons, and getting together with friends in Phila are helping me feel more balanced than I have been in a while. All work and no play makes Kathrin a very grumpy girl! The hermit life is so very unbecoming, no?
Looks like dinner and great conversation is in the works with several local LGBT/PoC activist friends of mine on Friday. The options – Lolitas, Cafe Apamate and Xochitl.
I have had the opportunity to sample more than a dozen of Pennsylvania’s microbrews over the last couple of months. NSC is looking to partner with several local breweries for our upcoming Global Tastes event.
If you happen to have spent the last three months under a rock, on a deserted island or in outer space, here is a quick run down: September 30, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Penn Museum (3260 South Street). Every year we invite 20-25 local, immigrant owned restaurants to showcase their cuisines as a way to highlight the rich diversity of the many ethnic communities that call Philadelphia home. It is going to be fantastic! We have a few surprised in store, so — be there!
So, which microbrews have are at the top of my list do you ask? Here come Kathrin’s Top 5 Picks (not sure why I just referred to myself in the third person….but just go with it):
Stoudts Brewery – Heifer-in-Wheat
A wonderful, dare I say traditional, hefeweizen that could go head to head with any German-brewed Hefe! Ghasp! Yes, yes I said it..amano to amano! I ran into one of their reps at a beer distributor on Fairmount this afternoon. I initially intended to snag a box of Blue Moon, but since they were out, he suggested the hefe! Crisp, fruity, bold, smooth! It pay just become my new beer of choice!
Manayunk Brewery – Bohemian Blonde & Blueberry Wheat
I first have to give a shout out to Manayunk Brewery for donating two brunch tickets that were raffled off at NSC’s Mission Mixer earlier this month. Onto the beer – I can’t decide between the Bohemian Blonde and the Blueberry Wheat. Yeah..I am noticing a theme! Blueberry Wheat was very….blue! It sort of wigged me out for a minute, but it made me very happy, especially the banana-y aftertaste. Right on! And…Bohemian Blonde is wonderfully light, literally and figuratively speaking.
So, yeah! That’s my story and I am sticking to it. There are about a dozen others I want to try so you may find me brewery hopping for the next few Wednesday Philly Sips.
What’s your favorite microbrew?
